George Stanley Halas — known to fans as "Papa Bear" — was not just the founder of the Chicago Bears. He was one of the founding fathers of the NFL itself. Born in Chicago in 1895, Halas played, coached, managed, and owned the Bears for over six decades.
He won eight NFL championships as head coach, pioneered game film study, and helped professionalize a sport that was barely an industry when he started. He coached the Bears until 1967 and passed away on October 31, 1983, at age 88.
